Wimba is series of Java plug-ins that allows sound and voice to be used in a similar way to how text is used in bullitin boards, chatrooms etc.
Although sound is used, the plug-ins have overcome many of the problems usually associated with using sound over slow internet connections. The sound files also get past firewalls.
The plug-in loads in your internet browser as required.
You will need a microphone and speakers attached to your computer (a headset is ideal).
Don't forget to turn the sound up on your computer! :-)
It is a good idea to check that your microphone and speakers are working correctly before you use the voice chat facilities.
For Windows users a good way to do this is to do a test recording using Windows
Sound Recorder.
Go to: Start / All Programs / Accessories / Entertainment / Sound Recorder.
Use this program to test your microphone and playback settings.
